Managing staff who are underperforming can be challenging. Underperformance can include:

  • unsatisfactory work performance, that is, a failure to perform the duties of the position or to perform them to the standard required
  • non-compliance with workplace policies, rules or procedures
  • unacceptable, disruptive or negative behaviour in the workplace that impacts on co-workers.

Underperformance should be dealt with promptly and appropriately by an employer or manage.

Legitimate comment or advice, including relevant critical feedback provided in the context of performance management, should not be confused with bullying, harassment or discrimination. However these conversations should be handled with sensitivity.
